Graham Greene wrote this novel in 1944 when he was under a 2 year contract to Metro-Godwyn-Mayer, and the manuscript lay in MGM's archives until 1983, forgotten. It was published for the first time in 1985, with an Introduction by the author. It follows the story of a man calling himself Jean-Louis Charlot who returned to the house of St. Jean de Brinac after an absence of 4 years. With the liberation of France, Paris had little to offer him. Instinctively, he made his way home, as many other men were doing all over France at that time, from prison camps, from hiding places, from foreign parts.
