The great Orson welles gives a superlative performance in The Stranger, an electrifying psychological melodrama co-starring Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young.
Charles Rankin (Orson Welles) is a college professor living in Connecticut with Mary (loretta Young) when one day a very nervous German man called Konrad Meineke (Konstantin Shayne) arrives in town. The newcomer is taken for a walk in the forest by the professor where the real indentity of Rankin becomes known; he is actually a notorious Nazi war criminal called Franz Kindler who has escaped justice. Meinke, conscience stricken by his own genocide wartime activites, has come to beg his former superior Kindler to surrender; for which he is brutally murdered. Kindler beleiving that his secret is safe doesn't bargain for the arrival of war crimes commissioner Wilson (Edward G. Robinson)., posing as a mild mannered antiques dealer. Wilson is determined to see the wartime criminal brought to justice.
Welles directed this taut thriller which was nominated for an Oscar for best original story.

This was the first film released after WWII that showed footage of the concentration camps.
