In December 1942 the author was wireless operator in a Halifax bomber returning from a raid at Mannheim when it was attacked by a German night fighter over Alsace-Lorraine the aircraft was set on fire in both port engines and the crew were ordered to bale out. Five crew members bailed out and three were captured but he and the navigator evaded capture and with the help of the French returned to Britain in March, 1943. A remarkable true story of their journey through occupied France, culminating in a hazardous mid-winter crossing of the Pyrenees which assumed nightmarish and tragic proportions. Includes over 20 illustrations.
